Volunteers are needed to follow mail carriers on rural routes and help collect food as well as help in unloading/sorting donated food at four local post office facilities.

Clothes for Kids – CherryVale Mall, Rockford Public Schools, and The Salvation Army join forces with other area businesses each year in an effort to provide a new back-to-school outfit for each homeless child in the school district. This event takes place in early August at CherryVale Mall. Volunteers assist donors in selecting a child’s wish list and then accept those items once purchased. Volunteers may be seated for this job.

Paint-a-thon – Since 1989, The Salvation Army has partnered with volunteers from many community groups and businesses to paint over 700 homes of seniors and disabled adults. The Paint-a-thon occurs each year on the second Saturday in August. This is a great opportunity for a team of volunteers!

Koats for Kids – Each fall The Salvation Army collects new and gently worn winter coats throughout our community. Volunteers are needed to sort and hang coats as well as register and assist families on distribution day.

Bell Ringing – The Salvation Army-Winnebago County utilizes volunteers from the community to ring the bell at designated Red Kettle Sites during the Christmas Season. Shifts are two hours in length. In 2009, over $224,000.00 was received in contributions through the Red Kettle. This money is used to provide assistance to those in need within Winnebago County throughout the year. Area churches, schools, clubs, and organizations are asked to consider adopting a kettle for several days, a week, or more.

Forest of Trees – Since 1996, CherryVale Mall has been home to the Forest of Trees. This is a donation site for new gifts which are given by shoppers and distributed through The Salvation Army’s Social Service Programs at Christmas time. The Forest is set-up for six weeks during November and December. Volunteers serve as hosts…welcoming visitors, explaining the program, and accepting donations. Shifts are generally 2 hours in length. Volunteers may be seated for this job.

Food for the Needy – Food is collected through area schools and businesses for this event, which takes place during the Christmas Season. Volunteers can assist with registering families, sorting and packing food, or distribution. In recent years, over 2500 households have received food assistance each Christmas.

Toy Wrap – Volunteers help wrap and prepare Christmas gifts for mailing to children who have a parent that is incarcerated. Approximately 700 gifts are distributed annually.

Toy House – Christmas gifts, which are received through the Forest of Trees and 12 Hours of Salvation Toy Drive at Lou Bachrodt Auto Mall, are distributed through the Toy House. Families must be registered in order to participate. Many volunteers are needed to sort the donated gifts and assist parents when the Toy House is open.

ARC Christmas Party – The Salvation Army’s Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC) is home to 80+ men who are involved in work therapy and addiction counseling. Community volunteers help make the season bright by serving a special dinner to the men at their Christmas Party.
